Bigger Than the Boogie Man
“Do you not know?
Have you not heard?
The Lord is the everlasting God,
the Creator of the ends of the earth.
He will not grow tired or weary,
and his understanding no one can fathom.”
Isaiah 40:28 (NIV)

Arise and shine, dear one! God is with you!
"Mom, I'm scared."
My youngest son came to me with his fears. We talked through what was troubling him, and then I sang a little song I learned years ago, courtesy of VeggieTales:
God is bigger than the boogie man
He's bigger than Godzilla, or the monsters on TV
Oh, God is bigger than the boogie man
And He's watching out for you and me
As I sang, my son's face brightened. Full of newfound confidence, he began remembering stories from the Bible… God shutting the mouths of lions, and the prophecy of Jesus crushing the head of the snake. (We even changed the lyrics to include these important details.)
With the start of a new year upon us, we may feel anticipation about what lies ahead. Or, like my son, we may feel afraid. Fears from the past and uncertainties about the future can creep in, leaving us shaken and unsure.
But as we see in Isaiah, we have a big God. He's the Creator of the universe! He doesn't grow sick, worn out, or exhausted. His knowledge and understanding, from the tiniest detail to the most complex concept, are limitless. He can handle anything, and He's never scared or worried.
As you step into this new year, lay your uncertainties, doubts, and fears at the feet of Jesus. When worrying thoughts sneak in, dear one, remember that God is bigger… and it may help to sing the song:
God is bigger than the boogie man… and He's watching out for you and me!
