Faith that Walks on Water

“Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.”
“Come,” he said.
Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!”
Matthew 14:28-30 (NIV)

Faith that Walks on Water

“Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear.
But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”
Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?”
And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.””
Matthew 14:25-33 (NIV)

Arise and shine, dear one! God is with you!

As I look at this passage in Matthew, I love Peter’s desire to come to Jesus on the water. He starts out doing great…until he sees the wind. He took his eyes off Jesus and focused on what surrounded him instead and fear crept in, even though Jesus had just said “don’t be afraid.” Peter began to sink and cried out for Jesus to save him. Jesus was right there, reaching out his hand, catching Peter, and reminding him to not doubt.

I kept going back to this story this week when the storms of life came crashing around me. It can be easy to fear when something shakes your world and all you can do is trust God. I want to have a faith that gets out of the boat and walks on water to Jesus, not afraid of the winds of this world. To do that, I have to keep my eyes steady on Jesus and the Truth of what I know from His Word. It makes all the difference!

Are you overwhelmed by life’s circumstances, dear one? Maybe you’ve been caught in a moment where you felt like you were drowning and you called out, “Lord, save me!” He’s ready to reach out His hand and catch you. Keep your eyes fixed on Him and desire to have a faith that if Jesus called you to come to Him, you could walk on water, too.
