He Calms the Chaos

“He stilled the storm to a whisper;
the waves of the sea were hushed.
They were glad when it grew calm,
and he guided them to their desired haven.”
Psalm 107: 29–30 (NIV)

Arise and shine, dear one! God is with you!

I love going to the ocean, especially after the week of heat that we’ve had. I am happy to just sit and watch the waves crash against the rocks. It’s a place that always reminds me of the sovereignty, vastness, and power of our God. I often reflect on how God both created everything and how He has complete control over it.

In the Gospels we read of how Jesus both calmed the storm at the sound of His voice and how He walked on water. It doesn’t matter how powerful the storm or the physics of the sea, Jesus has supreme authority over it all.

In Kristi McLelland’s book, Rediscovering Israel, she explains how in Jewish literature, water represents chaos. Looking through this lens brings new light to both the verses in Psalm 107 and Jesus’ command over water. We see that God calms the chaos. He guides us and brings peace amid the storms of life.

In times when the world seems so full of chaos or there’s anxiety in our own hearts, we can lean into the Prince of Peace. Jesus has power not only over the elements in nature, but He can bring peace beyond understanding to our soul.

What’s causing you anxiety? Where are you sensing chaos around you? Surrender it to the Lord, dear one. Trust that He can bring you peace and calm the chaos.
