Stepping Into the Unknown

"Lord, if it's you," Peter replied, "tell me to come to you on the water."
"Come," he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus.
Matthew 14:28-29 (NIV)

Stepping Into the Unknown

Matthew 14:28-29 (NIV)

Arise and shine, dear one! God is with you!

I stood on a cliff's edge, watching waves crash against jagged rocks below. My husband and I were discussing our future… specifically, the restlessness we both felt about our family. We had two young children, the perfect boy-and-girl pair I'd always dreamed of. Yet something whispered we weren't complete.

As I stared at the churning ocean, I confessed my fear. Opening ourselves to more children meant stepping into the unknown… more financial strain, less time, physical toll. This wasn't our plan, but I sensed it was God's.

Standing there, I thought of Peter's willingness to leave the boat and walk toward Jesus on the water. Our decision felt the same… stepping out of the safety of my plans and onto uncertain waters with Jesus.

Years later, I think back to that cliff-side conversation. We had two more children, and now our family feels complete. I can't imagine life without them. God knew what our family needed better than we did.

That moment built my faith to trust Jesus with His plans, and it's something He continues asking of me, one day at a time. The lyrics from Oceans by Hillsong United capture it perfectly:

Spirit lead me where my trust is without borders
Let me walk upon the waters
Wherever You would call me
Take me deeper than my feet could ever wander
And my faith will be made stronger
In the presence of my Savior

Will you trust Him, dear one? Even when it looks terrifying, will you get out of the boat and walk to Jesus? Surrender your fears to Him. Your faith will grow stronger, one step at a time.
