The Smile I'll Never Forget

“Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.”
2 Corinthians 9:6-8 (NIV)

Arise and shine, dear one! God is with you!

The man in line in front of me at the grocery store checkout was hard to miss. He pulled up in his mobility scooter with American flags proudly attached and a hat verifying his service to our country. He was only purchasing a rotisserie chicken, but when he attempted to pay, his card was declined.

I immediately stepped in and told the cashier I would cover it. He thanked me for my generosity. I told him God loves him and thanked him for his service to our country. His smile is something I'll never forget!

In 2 Corinthians, Paul reminds the church to be generous. Our giving shouldn't come from drudgery or compulsion, but from an attitude of joy. God promises to bless us abundantly as we give, but that doesn't mean we're guaranteed earthly riches. Sometimes the blessing is the smile from a stranger that brightens our day and encourages us to continue in good works, all as an outpouring of what Jesus has done for us.

Generosity should be a hallmark of our lives as God's daughters. As you take stock of your own life, in what ways can you be generous, dear one? Ask the Holy Spirit to lead you in your decisions to give of your money, resources, and time. Keep your eyes open to see the needs around you, and when God has blessed you to meet those needs, step forward in faith.

Generosity isn't about having abundance… it's about being ready with open hands. What's one way you can open yours today?
