Even When I Can't See

Updated: Apr 30, 2024

By Darla Butterfield

I’ve been looking out the window a lot today. The slight chance for snow or any sign of flurries has had me frequently glancing outside to see if I can see anything falling. This morning I looked out towards Mount Hood and glimpsed a stunning view of the snow-capped mountain in the distance. It was gorgeous! No snow at our house today, but a beautiful view! This afternoon I looked again for that same amazing view of the mountain, but this time it was gone…just clouds in the distance obscuring my view of Mount Hood. It’s amazing how some days are like that. The mountain in all its glory is in view and I am in awe of the beauty of Oregon…and then it’s like it magically disappears other days or even weeks. I know it’s still there, off in the distance, but I can’t see any remnant of it remaining.

It can feel like that with God sometimes. We know He’s always there. I know Mount Hood is still there, somewhere. The mountain hasn’t moved, I just can’t see it. Sometimes we can’t see how God is working or feel His presence. We may wonder how He’s going to work through a situation or what His plan is. We can, however, cling to the truth of the gospel and His promises throughout scripture. We know God is at work for our good and His glory, even when we can’t see it or understand His ways.

At Christmas time, we can reflect back on that blessed Hope that arrived as a baby…Jesus, God in human form came down to redeem us. He had a plan all along. He knew what He was doing, even in the darkest days when the people of Israel were waiting for their Messiah to come. We can trust Him. We can trust that He’s there despite the clouds of this world overshadowing our view. He’s working and He knows us. He loves us more than we can ever imagine.

Maybe tomorrow will bring some snowflakes to enjoy or a clear view of the mountains. For now, I’ll enjoy being cozy inside, thankful for the One that I know is always there.
